Mixtape Review

“Thank the Lord I’m alive, they tried to kill ya boy” was the first response JR Writer gave to his fans on Twitter when he was shot back in October. Although getting shot can be a troubling time, Writer used this as pure motivation to get right back in the booth and record that crack. Still Standing is the mixtape/street album that resulted from the many sessions in the booth.

Writer has his formula for starting off a mixtape or album: he doesn’t talk your head, instead dives straight in spits for 2 and a half minutes. He continues through the tape blazing through punch lines and intricate rhymes. I never found myself clicking Next on any songs, instead I was starting many of them over, including “Back At It”, “60 Bars of Torture”, “Man On Fire”, "Live From The D.R.", “G.O.A.T.”, “Win”, “I Do”, “Welcome To My Life”, “I Don’t Give A Fuck” and “ThundaByrdz”.

By the end of the mixtape, you realize Writer isn’t slowing down anytime soon. His rhymes are as good as ever and the beat selection is pretty great as well. At 25 tracks/60 minutes, he isn’t stingy while giving away his music. Fans of Writer will be playing this one for a while, and will agree it was worth the wait!
